If you are like me and always looking for new voices in Horror, there is no way you can go wrong with this collection. A great book of stories that go from the sublime to the serene, from the horrific to the gut- wrenching.The last time I was so surprised by a collection was "Beyond the Night" by Cornell Woolrich. These stories mix the other-worldly creepiness of Lovecraft and the atmosphere of Robert Aickman. Throw in some "guts in your face" of Clive Barker and you will enter in another world of dreams and nightmares. A prose that is easy to read and get under your skin and you will think about for days afterward. A new favorite of mine.

As a rule I am a fan of the short story format which is frustrating because there are so few good collections out there. I have read some of Mr. Ferace's previous works and enjoyed them greatly. With the exception of being suspiciously prolific, he is a writer of no small ability. The collection Imago Mortis ran the gambit from the humorous to the tragic. There was a density and layering uncomon not just among independent authors by the genre in general. Due to my general proclivities. Afterboirth was my favorite though be warned not for the faint of heart. I can readily recommend this well crafted tome and think that it would be a nice addition for the holiday....
I always look forward to reading James Ferace! His hard work and intricate story telling is terrifying and keeps one on the edge of their seat. His short stories stay with one for days and have a way of creeping under your skin teasing you for nights on end. After reading his stories one might wonder where his mind wanders and crawls to come up with his stories...then upon second thought, I don't want to know lol. Please have a strong drink ready whilst reading because one will need to relax and eventually sleep as you close your down ( or close your book ) and remember sleep with a light on.

James Ferace has written a collection of stories that are endlessly fascinating. His brand of writing draws you in and, best of all, makes you think, which is a quality that is lacking from a lot of modern writers. This book is well worth reading!
Dark and brooding, suspenseful and twisted. This book does not let your mind stray away from the lines on the pages. Mr.Ferace is a highly talented author and knows how to keep people on their toes. I would highly recommend this book!
Imago Mortis is the first major release from the relatively unknown but wonderfully skilled James Ferace, an author whose talent is quickly made apparent in this anthology. This volume contains most of his short stories, and those not available here are available on Lulu.com.
Mr. Ferace's words beckon the reader with intrigue, and his prose envelops the mind until it's blissfully immersed in the deliciously macabre world of his storytelling. The characters are deep, emotionally intricate, and quite well-developed considering the length of these tales.
Many of these stories are the type that stick with you - Mr. Ferace will fascinate you with the often somber way in which he expresses himself, and you'll still be considering their meaning days later. These stories are excellently crafted, their themes beautifully dark and disturbing and passionately conveyed, and they cover a range of genres and topics. Some passages are told with heart-wrenching sorrow, others with gut-wrenching angst, and many are cleverly sprinkled here and there with Mr. Ferace's terrifically biting humor.
"Fat Tuesday" is a fun and entertaining read, with enjoyably supernatural elements and a lot of action. "Afterbirth" is unnerving and disturbing, and is one of those aforementioned tales that Mr. Ferace's audience will still be thinking about days later. The haunting and mysterious "Fair Quarter" contains a comprehensively developed setting and some dramatic twists, and its ideas also remain firmly implanted in the reader's brain for some time. Wisdom Teeth is powerful and moving, and forces the reader to follow the character emotionally through his trauma and the exactment of his revenge. While I've only named a few here, all of the stories are excellent - none will disappoint.
I'm enthralled by these accounts, as Mr. Ferace's writing just... speaks to me on a certain level. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author, and can hardly contain my excitement over his upcoming release, the much-anticipated poetry anthology. While his skill is made obvious in the telling of these stories, I think his brilliance shines even more clearly through his poetry.
This is not the first book I have read by Ferace, nor will it be the last. Lines such as, "There is nothing savory about me. Not a single soul has walked away from me with the idea that I even come close to being the human form of one of those deeply-rooted experiences," and "...every evening, the concept of laying at length, still, motionless in a darkened room was akin to some kind of freakish punishment of ungodly proportions," affect me. He touches at the heart of the fear inside of me. Something about Ferace's writing is hauntingly lovely and frightening at the same time. Don't take my word for it, read it for yourself. You won't regret it...or maybe you will when you find yourself laying awake at night with his images in your head...
